Colour fields again!

In this sketch, I used colour with my repeating unit of a small triangle. The repeating units were made of lines, giving them a transparency.
I then used shaded in rectangles to form squares.
Squares are very harmonious shapes and to liven up the harmony, each square is made of two or more colours: some times in stark contrast and other times almost monochrome.
This sketch could be the seed for an explorative series.

Colour Fields Revisited

In this week's post, I would like to show you my exercise on squared paper with water colour and ink. Here I am playing with repeating units of the circle and semi circle. I have used variation in size and colour contrast, as also negative spaces.
Vasarely used such colour fields to convey his sense of an inner geometry in nature and became known for his founding role in Op-Art. His art evokes in the viewer the movement of the shapes he created using lines and colour fields.
My intention is more mundane: I am using geometric shapes to create an interplay of colours by repeating the shapes and leaving negative spaces. My exercise is purely non objective.

Rhythm and Non Objective Art III

Today I present to you one of the next steps in my series. Here I am exploring shapes, colour and contrasts. I have done away with the grid lines I used as guides when using the repeating unit of the small black triangle.
I have added circles and rectangles that I derived from another series that I worked on. This work (15 x 15 cm, ink and water colour on stone paper) is a synthesis of two series, and my first experiment with stone paper. I love its heavy feel and its translucent quality.
Much light!

I am an artist. I live and work in Berlin.
I started to paint colour fields (very much inspired by Mark Rothko and other American Abstract Expressionists) and now have evolved into an admirer of the Bauhaus Movement. I am still  a seeker: minimalist concrete art finds resonance in me, while the rich colours and traditional art forms of my home country that flow in me and breathe in me, also find expression in my work.
My work, I believe is a synthesis of all these influences and seeming contradictions. I am now knocking a dent into concrete art, non objectively so to speak! I work serially and can endlessly look for emerging patterns in my work.
This has been a wonderful journey, and as they say: the path is the destination.
In my blog posts, I am letting you have a peek over my shoulder, into my sketch books and small works, which will someday flow into my big canvases and other works; works that I will actually display or exhibit (or may be not).
My blog posts are more about my process and what motivates me to paint and create.
