"Selfie"

This is a "Selfie" I did in art class after George Condo (a follower of the Picasso tradition). I loved doing this and am quite satisfied with the results: this self- portrait captures the essential physiognomy that defines me I think.
There is much hype about people posting Selfies on Social Media and studies that classify such protagonists as narcissists or psychopaths. In the good old days, however, selfies were mainly done to overcome a lack of models (sometimes also because the artist was penniless). Of course, this doesn't rule out artists that show cased themselves or made a statement with their "performances".

Simulacrum II

I love the colour blue: it has way more energy than the reds, scientifically speaking that is.
Sadhguru in his explanation of the meaning of colours says that the colour blue depicts things and concepts that are "all inclusive" and beyond our ability to perceive them in their wholeness. And I agree.
This sketch that I completed this week is an invocation of this all inclusive energy into our lives. At a very fundamental level, we are all connected to one another.
Nothing is as it appears to be.

Again from the booklet "101 Things to do in Art School": "Simulacrum refers to a likeness or simulation that has the appearance but not the substance of the thing it resembles".
So question to you: What does this sketch resemble? Is all art simulacrum?
Best to you! Have a great week!

Form is limitless

I bought myself a small booklet called "101 Things to learn in Art School" by Kit White in a Museum Shop in Stockholm and am forever delighted in the little nuggets of gold this book holds. For e.g. " Form is limitless" A pure state of possibilities until it is defined.
I love this statement (if one can possibly do such a thing): For one, it is a constant reminder to me of the true nature of our being. We are limitless in our possibilities and the moment we become judgmental and defining, that is our "truth". To me this underlines the common adage "Thoughts become things". So if we decide to define things, let us at least make "good things".

I am an artist. I live and work in Berlin.
I started to paint colour fields (very much inspired by Mark Rothko and other American Abstract Expressionists) and now have evolved into an admirer of the Bauhaus Movement. I am still  a seeker: minimalist concrete art finds resonance in me, while the rich colours and traditional art forms of my home country that flow in me and breathe in me, also find expression in my work.
My work, I believe is a synthesis of all these influences and seeming contradictions. I am now knocking a dent into concrete art, non objectively so to speak! I work serially and can endlessly look for emerging patterns in my work.
This has been a wonderful journey, and as they say: the path is the destination.
In my blog posts, I am letting you have a peek over my shoulder, into my sketch books and small works, which will someday flow into my big canvases and other works; works that I will actually display or exhibit (or may be not).
My blog posts are more about my process and what motivates me to paint and create.
