Happy Summer!

As I break off for my summer break this week, I would like to post a personal sketch made on my sunny terrace enjoying a few moments of warm sunshine on an otherwise wet and clammy day: the weather Gods could not decide between rain or shine.
What you see is what you see: Patterns from the floor of my sun kissed terrace and ... the rest is left to your imagination.
I shall be posting again after my summer break.

Harmony and Equilibrium...

I was recently pondering over whether my paintings were becoming "too soothing" to the eye.
The following quote by Ilya Bolotowsky (1974) is reassuring: "Nowadays when paintings torture the retina, when music gradually destroys the eardrums, there must, all the more, be a need for an art that searches for new ways to achieve harmony and equilibrium.
So now I can investigate my repetitive colour fields in / with confidence.

This week I would like to document a dear friend's visit to Berlin. We had a nice time talking to each other and preparing a surprise for his husband. Portrayed here is the wrapper of pineapple rice cakes from Taiwan. Loved the "puttu" taste that I miss so much!

The face is the picture of the mind...

Cicero once said:"The face is the picture of the mind with the eyes as its interpreter."
Today I post a sketch of my son with an angelic smile and a look that said a million words and none. I strive to remember this smile in difficult times. Parents with budding teenagers will understand me: the struggles of growing up are exhausting.

Aruna Samivelu

I am an artist. I live and work in Berlin.
I started to paint colour fields (very much inspired by Mark Rothko and other American Abstract Expressionists) and now have evolved into an admirer of the Bauhaus Movement. I am still a seeker: minimalist concrete art finds resonance in me, while the rich colours and traditional art forms of my home country that flow in me and breathe in me, also find expression in my work.
My work, I believe is a synthesis of all these influences and seeming contradictions. I am now knocking a dent into concrete art, non objectively so to speak! I work serially and can endlessly look for emerging patterns in my work.
This has been a wonderful journey, and as they say: the path is the destination.
In my blog posts, I am letting you have a peek over my shoulder, into my sketch books and small works, which will someday flow into my big canvases and other works; works that I will actually display or exhibit (or may be not).
My blog posts are more about my process and what motivates me to paint and create.
