Room with a view

Today I present to you Graffiti sprayed over walls of residences in Neukölln, Berlin.
This locality, like Kreuzberg in Berlin, is breeding ground for the sprayers. While some may view the sprayers with disdain and as a nuisance, others are thankful for the colour they infuse into these localities.
A quick sketch done from the first floor window of a building in Neukölln.
Have a great Sunday!

I have been looking at several artists' works in original (and very often on the internet too) and one artist (there are several on my list) that I would like to see in original is Bruce Marsden.
To me his works convey space and a sense of ease with which he accomplishes this. In my sketch above I have tried to capture this. I still have not been able to figure out what he had before him, when he did his etching. Maybe he was just playing with the lines.
I love them.

Boundless

There is something in all of us that doesn't like boundaries.
Yet boundaries are most necessary for definitions.
This constant struggle that each one of us faces in finding and defining ourselves is a process of refining and redefining. As an artist I find this process, simply put, a challenge: I am finding boundaries cumbersome. I wish to be boundless!
Happy Sunday all!

Allowing ourselves to be touched

Recent events in my family have led me to consider whether and the extent to which I allow myself to be touched by life. By this I mean: Do I rejoice in the small things that present themselves in my life on a daily basis? Sadhguru in his talk says it need not necessarily be the human touch.
It is really the small things that matter: that sunrise, that soft breeze, that Ice Cream we enjoy (with our loved ones) or that time spend with each other (catching up on each other's lives); that phone call that makes our day, the list is endless.
So before we spend our lives waiting for that dream house / partner / job / bank balance, let us make ourselves aware of the million other things for which we could be grateful and thankful for.
Much light!

Today I share with you a sketch I made in class. Our teacher had asked us to depict the protecting and the attacking nature of the chestnuts she had brought with her. While it was immediately obvious to me, that the chestnuts had long menacing spikes (that actually hurt on touch) and soft fleshy layers protecting the nut on the inside, the marvelous simplicity of the evolution of the chestnut eluded me for a while.
The precise manner in which the nuts split, the time and temperature at which they do so, are all programmed for the propagation of life through this humble chestnut. There is a Divine Intelligence that orchestrates these events.
Similarly, this Divine Intelligence exists in each of us too, in every living cell. All we have to do is to allow ourselves to be guided by this Intelligence. It is written: You are God's temple. It is our prime duty to care of this temple. There is a purpose to everything.
Much light!

I am an artist. I live and work in Berlin.
I started to paint colour fields (very much inspired by Mark Rothko and other American Abstract Expressionists) and now have evolved into an admirer of the Bauhaus Movement. I am still  a seeker: minimalist concrete art finds resonance in me, while the rich colours and traditional art forms of my home country that flow in me and breathe in me, also find expression in my work.
My work, I believe is a synthesis of all these influences and seeming contradictions. I am now knocking a dent into concrete art, non objectively so to speak! I work serially and can endlessly look for emerging patterns in my work.
This has been a wonderful journey, and as they say: the path is the destination.
In my blog posts, I am letting you have a peek over my shoulder, into my sketch books and small works, which will someday flow into my big canvases and other works; works that I will actually display or exhibit (or may be not).
My blog posts are more about my process and what motivates me to paint and create.
